The Return (Film Review)

Yes, about a year after it was released in the English speaking world, The Return finally made it to German cinemas, thus still arriving before Christopher Nolan's big budget take on the Odyssey next year. Like many another person, I assume sight unseen that Nolan's take will be pretty much the opposite, given that The Return focuses exclusively on, well, the story of the suitors harrassing Penelope and Telemachus and Odysseuys' return to Ithaca with ensueing consequences, has thrown out the Gods and any other magical elements entirely from the story and takes place solely on Ithaca within a few days with a small ensemble of characters. (Incidentally, the "Penelope and Telemachus on Ithaca/ The Homecoming" part of the story actually is the main tale of the Homeric epic, which reliably surprises everyone who reads it. The adventures with Sirens, Cyclops and Sea Monsters part is contained in the middle where Odysseus (not the most reliable narrator under the best of circumstances) is narrating it to his hosts and a relatively short portion of the story.) All this being said, having now watched it, I would call The Return a good movie with some stellar performances by our leads - Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes uniting their actory prowess for the third time - , but that it fails in one important regard as an adaptation of the Odyssey, and no, it's not because there are no Gods and other supernatural beings around. But again: as a film, it is great and immensely watchable.

Get That AI Outta Here!

1) In another sign of AI run amuk, I do the AARP Trivia quiz each day. I swear they have delegated its creation to AI. There have often been errors in the past, usually spelling ones, though sometimes also offering the same answer twice (out of 4 choices) -- which if it happens to be the right answer means you have a 50/50 chance of being wrong even when you're right.

Last weekend there were two. An "explainer" or "further info" box usually pops up after you finish a question. One of them just said "nar."But my favorite was the question "What is the name of dish where beef is cooked in wine." The answer? Coq au Vin. To boot the explainer mentioned that though the name meant rooster it was often made with chicken. Which is, as we know, beef. Read more... )

2) This is the first I've heard that Friday Night Lights is getting a sequel, or maybe a reboot depending on how you look at it.

3) Back in October my Garmin tracker just stopped working as I was biking. It didn't do anything the rest of the day and I figured its (unchargeable) battery was dying, since it was guaranteed for a year and it was almost exactly that. Since Garmin seems to be moving away from selling trackers, I decided to try a Fitbit as my partner was satisfied with his. However the next day, the Garmin was working again, so I hadn't opened or set up the Fitbit yet.

Cut to last weekend when it went out again while I was exercising. The Garmin came back after an hour but I'm suspecting that the battery is dying and so it's particularly stressed during continuous activity. It's probably been cutting out for some time, as I've noticed odd differences in step reports during days that are functionally the same.

Skipping over all the things I already don't like about the Fitbit, I decided to start using it alongside the Garmin. The first morning, before I even started exercising, there was already a 200 step difference between what the Fitbit showed and what the Garmin reported. Read more... )

3) Saw the last Mission Impossible movie and have to say I was pretty unimpressed. Of course, they were never my favorites to start with. I thought I'd done a review of an earlier film but if so, I can't find it. So this will have to do. Read more... )

4) As if people who need groceries delivered (likely those with disabilities or lack of transport) weren't already paying more, now there's dynamic food pricing in action. "hundreds of volunteers shopped on Instacart for identical baskets of goods from Safeway and Target. Of the 437 participants, every single one was exposed to algorithmic price experiments, according to the report. The investigation also found evidence of price experimentation at Albertsons, Costco, Kroger and Sprouts Farmers Market." " All told, the price variations could cost families $1,200 a year, based on how much Instacart says the typical household of four spends on groceries."

"Customers were also shown different "original" prices, making some savings appear larger, the report found, a concept known as "fictitious pricing." Amazon was sued this October for allegedly using this tactic during its summer Prime Day sale."

Also a shout out to Consumer Reports for being one of the few sources that can be counted on in this time of media greed, kowtowing, and chasing squirrels.

5) While I've noticed my grocery has these errors all the time, perhaps they're just a new business practice. The attorney general's office said its investigation revealed that during 2019 and 2023, Dollar General failed more than 40 percent of pricing accuracy inspections.

"The settlement also requires Dollar General to modify its business practices to prevent future violations of Pennsylvania's consumer protection law, the attorney general's office said. The changes include training employees, maintaining enough staffing to update shelf tags weekly and posting notices at registers saying the lowest posted price will be honored." "We are hopeful the corporation takes this settlement very seriously as Pennsylvanians expect to pay the price that is on stickers and labels.""

Custodian

In high school, my best friend and several of her friends had an opportunity to travel to France as part of a school trip. (I studied Spanish and was in a different grade anyway, so no France trip for me at that time, but I did have that incredible trip to El Salvador just before high school)

When the school group returned from the trip, they shared many stories and souvenirs: amazing things seen, wonderful delights. One of the stories that really stuck with me was about how they wound up somewhere where French people had some sort of exhibit about different types of work. It might have been some sort of French holiday?

What stood out for the group of high schoolers (and me) was how this exhibit of different types of work took all of the types of work on display equally seriously, particularly including things such as custodial work (e.g. here are the tools of the trade, what's involved in carrying out the work).

I think about this story often, across a range of contexts. For example, learning about various uprisings and political movements in France's history. Thinking about how genuine or disingenuous people are being when talking about humans as "stewards (custodians) of the earth." Reading Studs Terkel's book Working, which compiles interviews of American workers talking about their work. Watching where and when dust bunnies show up, across public settings, across countries and cultures.

Rainy and windy December

It's been unseasonably wet and warm here lately. Lots of rain, wind, and occasional lows of 9C.
The ground is getting that mud pie feel as I do yard stuff. Still, I am not mad at being able to play outside still. Usually it's too cold for comfort to be out long.

Oh you little chaos monkey. I will miss the absolute hell out of you. Go annoy your sister now.

An hour to wait before they open

JonJon has been declining quickly and I'm waiting for the vet to open to see whether I can get him in. Over the last week, week and a half-ish, he's been eating less and sleeping more. Over the last few days, if I mix in tube treats or top with tube treats, he's eaten a little more but not much and is still sleeping more. Now overnight he'll ask for food and then literally scoot away from it like it's poison when I try to give it to him.

Naturally he's seeming to bottom out when I just dropped Emily and her niece off last night to take the trains to Brooklyn to see a concert tonight so as much as I'm theoretically not supposed to, I'll be lifting the boy and his crate to get him seen if I can get him in.

He had his radioactive iodine treatment about three and a half years ago and the average lifespan for a cat that's had that treatment is 2-5 years and he had kidney issues and those kitties don't generally hit the 3 year mark so he's exceeded that. I know I've been not great about getting him seen over the last couple of years but with the exception of having to regularly add Miralax to his food for regular pooping, he's not had issues.

I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of hopes if I get him in today. But the little guy is not doing well and I am of the mind of not forcing treatment just to squeeze out a little more time for me rather than him.

If that happens, no more kitties for me. I have enough issues taking care of myself.

What's up?

Hi folks, I hope you all are doing well. Not good at doing these intro things, but I'll give it a try. I'm Lesley. I'm in my late thirties, happily married and I have one cat child. I love books of all types, I'm currently making my way through the Dungeon Crawler Carl books, Tv shows including The Golden girls, How I met your Mother, Grace and Frankie and others. I love all kinds of music, and I enjoy baking. I welcome people of all backgrounds and stuff, I'm a Christian myself. as for what I write about in here, To be honest, there's only one entry in here, but I plan on changing that. I will most likely write about daily life things, and sometimes about what I'm watching/reading/listening to as well as mental and physical health stuff. I am totally blind, so sometimes I will write about that. If there is anything else you wanna know, feel free to take a peak at the profile. I will be writing in here probably every few days to every week. Depends on the mood I'm in. I hope all of you have a good day, and if you celebrate them, happy holidays

Seeking New Friends

Name: Georgiana or Georgie. Neither is my legal name, but they are what I use here and in most situations.

Age: Forty-two.

I mostly post about: Entries may consist of anything from short summaries of my day, to surveys, to essays on various topics, to interesting links and quotes that I find, along with my commentary on them. Lately, I have been writing reviews of opera recordings from the 1950's and earlier. I have no interest in politics and modern celebrities. I wish to keep my journal light and happy as much as possible.

My hobbies are: studying dandyism, Received Pronunciation, the Regency, and the Italian language, reading, writing, cooking, baking, playing cards and dice, and enjoying warm weather.

My Other Interests include: coffees, teas, antique menswear and accessories (usually Edwardian), chamber and classical music, old opera singers, plants and gardening, crafts, and history and nature documentaries. I love wit, wordplay, and sarcastic humour without vulgarity. I also love cats.

My fandoms are: I don't have any.

I'm looking to meet people who: are positive, who share my interests and can introduce me to some new ones, and who enjoy at least some elements of high culture. While the minimum age I will add is twenty-one, I tend to get along with those who are older than I, particularly seniors. I am also single and searching, but since this isn't a dating community, I'll just say that you can find more about that in one of the sticky entries in my journal. You can also find my Mastodon and Escargot.chat information there.

My posting schedule tends to be: It varies, from a few posts in a given week to a few in a single day. Often, I post what I call filler entries toward the end of the month. These are entries posted on one date but for another. I try to post a few entries per week.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: minors (I prefer at least over twenty-one), depression and/or anxiety (posted regularly), bad self-esteem, life drama, recreational drugs, religion or politics (posted regularly), a lot of bad grammar and spelling (unless you're learning English), and frequent obscenities. Please note that I am totally blind, so if you mostly post images, I won't be able to comment on them, as I cannot see them.

Before adding me, you should know: I have no time for political correctness, lies, or drama. While I always try to be civil during discussions, I share my opinion without reservations. If you are easily offended, please do not add me. I have a very dry and witty sense of humour. Otherwise, feel free to read my profile and/or posts and add me if you wish. I will most likely reciprocate. I also comment when I have something to say, but there are times when I don't read my friends' page for awhile, and I am trying to change that.

Update on my life

I realized today that a lot of my friends don't know about what I've gone through this year.

Last year in June I moved back to Minnesota to look after my dad. My mom was in the hospital for a month and then moved to a nursing home with sudden-onset dementia (B1 deficiency) secondary to cancer.

I intended to support them temporarily but decided to make it a more permanent move to support them and their many animals. I struggled and kept expecting other family members to step up, but they did not.

I was hospitalized in May 2025 after a seizure. (Two seizures in 3 years means a new diagnosis of epilepsy.) I am missing about a week or 2 of memories from directly after that experience, so I don't know for sure what happened. I was busy looking after my dad and the animals, and then coordinating a move for my parents into assisted living, which I mostly did myself, While recovering from a seizure, with a broken rib.

I don't know why-- again, I don't remember (likely from medication side effects), but no one from the family came to help me directly after the seizure. My dad (who has dementia) and I did it alone. I'm angry about it and need people to know.

I supported my family for a year and half and did not receive any funds, no salary, very little emotional or logistical help from my brother, his wife, or his 4 healthy teenage kids. There is a wider extended family and they didn't show up either. We got some occasional visits but it wasn't enough.

Since moving my parents into assisted living, I have continued to support them in many ways, including looking after their farm and animals, again with no funds.

This week I asked my brother to help me advocate with my dad, to get me some money. He said no. He believes we should sell the farm (where I am now living). He made no mention of any provisions for me.

I'm obviously very upset, but the anger is at least helping me communicate about what is happening. I am reaching out to friends and various family members and trying to raise the alarm to protect myself.

I am safe for the time being but it is not the best idea for me to be living alone. I had intended to find roommates to come live here with me, but there are some barriers, including me not being the property owner, and the house being a bit of a mess. My next step is to directly talk to my parents about this situation. They both have dementia but I think they are capable of understanding my position.

I am currently unsure what the best course of action is moving forward. But I at least want folks to know what is going on. It's been very helpful to talk on the phone with friends who are affirming to me that this is a fucked up way to be treated. It's been a bitter pill to swallow, realizing that my family is exploiting me.

Warm thoughts, mail, messages are all helpful.

This coldness just feels like a bit much. [status]

6 degrees Fahrenheit when I woke up this morning, which is, granted, better than the 2 degrees originally predicted.

It just takes so much energy to breathe during my bike commute, even with a balaclava.

I am thinking it might be nice to upgrade from ski pants to ski bibs for these sorts of temperatures.

And I should probably look into some double-walled ski goggles at some point, too.

Let's just have a moment with cats [cats]

The cats have been very snuggly lately. After a whole lot of diplomatic negotiations, they have figured out that Martha gets the leg spaces, and George gets the armpit spaces. While I was Zooming with S last night, Martha crawled into the Leg Cave, and George got into his spot. After the Zoom, however, I needed to get up and wash some dishes, so I had to try and extricate myself from the cats, as one does.

Anyway, this is far more entertaining than talking about all the rest of the grading I'm procrastinating from, or how cold it is (again).

Spartacus: House of Ashur 1.01 and 1.02

More than a decade ago, the tv show Spartacus was a guilty pleasure of mine. I started watching because BtVS and AtS alumnus Steven DeKnight was the showrunner (since then, he's also gathered additional geek cred with the first season of the Netflix Daredevil), and kept watching because as gory and pulpy and trashy as it was, it (after a bad pilot) turned into something compulsively watchable, with interesting characters galore, complicated relationships and good acting. You can read my review of the first season and the prequel season here, of the second season here, and of the third and final season here.

Now a spin-off of said show has just started (in my part of the world, you can watch it on Amazon Prime, but this seems to be different in different countries - like the original show, it gets shown on STARZ in the US) with the first two episodes released. I was alerted to this a few months ago when Steven DeKnight entertainingly shot down the whiny "Woke!" complaints by the usual suspects that started as soon as the first pics were released, showing, OMG, a black woman in a central role among the cast. (Given the original show had several prominent female characters, some of which were poc, and also had canon on screen important m/m relationships, and of course had at its central subject a slave revolt, it beats me why anoyne familiar with said original show should have assumed the show creators being inclined towards the Orance Menace type of entertainment and (lack of) ethos beats me, but there we are. Anyway, the premise of the show per se didn't feel like a must watch to me (more about this later), and I might have hesitated given all the Darth Real Life stuff dodging me, but all the indignation of ignorant fanatics definitely worked as great advertisement. What is the premise? Basically a canon AU, with the title of the spin-off: "Spartacus: House of Ashur" being a giveaway. I.e. it shows what would have happened if one of the original show's villains hadn't spoiler for the original show ) - what would have to Ashur, personally, that is, since everything else that happened in the third season of the original show still did happen in the canon AU which starts in what sounds like not even a year after the original show ended. While Ashur had been a good and entertaining villain, I hadn't exactly yearned for a "What if?" about him, yet, see above, external circumstances plus the fact the show really HAD been compulsive watching for me made me tune in and check out the first two episodes.

Gratitude! )

Mending report [projects]

I finally finished darning the current wear holes and moth holes in this wool cycling jersey.

Darning complete, at least for now

Darning complete, at least for now

Wool jerseys can be pretty expensive, not to mention many of them are one-time special-order items. A long time ago, when a friend organized for an order of wool jerseys for members of the Car Resistance Action Party, S put his jersey in the wash and it shrank in such a way that it became instantly unwearable. My CRAP jersey has fared better, but it's next in the jersey mending pile.

I lost the jersey size lottery with that one for the New England Randonneurs (but of course that meant [personal profile] threemeninaboat got lucky!!), not to mention, wool jerseys also actually vary quite a lot in how heavy/thick they are, and heavier isn't necessarily better.

Hopefully these repairs keep this particular one in service for a little while longer, maybe even long enough for another trip to France? I'm really not sure about that at this point (going to France again OR survival of the jersey).

4.54 billion years [status]

During dinner with a friend the other week, the friend mentioned a new-ish time management self help book called Four Thousand Weeks, where apparently the premise is about thinking about how much time one might have alive on this planet, to then think differently about one's priorities and what one does across that time.

Would you say it's good timing or poor timing to have a topic like this book come up, in the context of several weeks where first a Physics colleague died suddenly (didn't know him very well, but other colleagues and students have very much been affected), then our school's beloved lacrosse coach fell down stairs at home and died, then a colleague with terminal cancer died, too?

I'm really not sure.

But I don't feel like I have much else to report at the moment.

I did convince my rowing teammates to, once again, participate in a contest where we all rowed 6000m on the rowing machine and then ran a 5k, for a range of definitions of "ran." It took me 34 minutes to jog-trot the 5k part, heh, which made me think of several of you because really, this is the one time of year I ever attempt to run a 5k. Apparently that was 2 minutes slower for the run than the last time I participated in the Holiday Hustle, in 2023. My erg time was also slower.

But the running route was lovely, because of the recent snowfall.

Then I came home and tried to fix the garage door's doorknob, which had lost its set screw and came apart right when I was trying to leave to set things up for the rowing event. It was much easier to deal with during daylight hours, at least.

Then groceries and cooking, and now Martha is curled up in my lap, so I suppose I should just try to finish mending this first cycling jersey.

I mostly just need to organize my thoughts about what to tackle next, projects-wise.
